Star-shaped defect in CNT forest (SEM image: Division 6.8)
The scanning electron microscope photograph shows a star-shaped structure in a so-called carbon nanotube (CNT) forest. The structure had been induced by a stress crack. A chemical vapour deposition (CVD) process had been used for the synthesis of the CNT forest shown in the photograph.
CNT development for new materials applications and CNT chemical safety assessment is carried out in Division 6.6. (Contact: A. Meyer-Plath)

Gesundheits- und Umweltrisiken von Nanomaterialien (2007-2011) - Cover
BAuA, BfR, UBA, BAM and PTB recently published their first conclusion of the joint research strategy of the federal departmental research agencies "Nanotechnology - Health and Environmental Risks of Nanomaterials " (2007-2011).
With this document, the federal agencies draw up a conclusion on the status and the most important results of more than 80 research projects on prospects and risks of nanotechnology. They highlight the latest accomplishments with regard to the development of measurement and test methods, to the investigation of exposure to humans and the environment, and to risk assessment.
